How to park your car perfectly
Avoiding parking problems is the dream of many as parking is the most complicated manoeuvre to do while driving.
Here are a couple of tips and techniques for parking a car perfectly.
Do enjoy driving? For some people, it is a pleasant experience; for others, it is just a means to reach their destination. But whether you like driving or not, parking is inevitable.
There are no half measures when it comes to parking your car correctly. But following certain steps can help you get it right! Sometimes, finding parking becomes a difficult task, especially in cities where there are limited spaces available.
Especially after being stuck in congested traffic during rush hour, your stress level skyrockets. And now that you need to park, what should you do?
First of all, stay calm throughout the entire parking manoeuvre: don’t get anxious, especially if there are cars behind you, take all the time you need and you’ll see that your manoeuvre will be perfect!
But what kinds of parking are there?
Types of parking
There are three types of parking:
- parallel parking,
- perpendicular parking,
- angle parking.
Let’s take a look at them in more detail.
Parallel parking
Parallel parking is the most feared manoeuvre even by the most experienced drivers. But it is not impossible!
Here is a step-by-step guide for parallel parking:
- check all the mirrors and use the turn signals,
- position your car parallelly alongside the car that is in front of the vacant spot,
- put the gear into reverse and slowly begin to back up your vehicle along the side of the parked car,
- turn the steering wheel to the right and back up slowly until your vehicle is at a 45-degree angle from the curb,
- turn the steering wheel to the left. Keep checking the mirrors while moving backwards,
- you are almost done: when your front bumper is aligned with the rear bumper of the vehicle in front, slowly straighten your steering wheel as you continue to move backwards until your car is parallel to the curb. Voilà, you’re done parking!
Perpendicular parking
Perpendicular parking is considered the simplest type of parking because it requires few manoeuvres and is quite fast to do. Drivers may enter a perpendicular parking space head-on or in reverse.
Here is a step-by-step guide for perpendicular parking:
- check the mirrors and activate your indicators to communicate your intention to turn into the space.
- proceed until the passenger-side mirror is aligned with the parking line,
- turn the steering wheel all the way to the right while proceeding into the empty space,
- move your vehicle a bit forward and a bit backward to get the right placement,
- adjust the steering wheel to center your vehicle as you pull into the space before turning off the car.
And what about the reverse perpendicular parking? It’s easier than it seems!
- Pass the car on your right,
- Put the gear into reverse,
- turn the steering wheel to the parking side and continue reversing until your car is completely in the parking space.
Angle parking
Angle parking is probably the easiest type of parking because it allows drivers to glide into the parking spot quickly and efficiently with minimal steering.
Here is a step-by-step guide for angle parking:
- check all the mirrors and use the turn signals,
- proceed slowly and approach the free parking spot,
- start turning into the spot when your mirrors are even with the line on the side nearest you,
- adjust the steering wheel to center the vehicle as you pull into the space, being careful not to damage other objects or cars,
- straighten your wheels.
With a bit of patience and practice, you will become a real parking master… Or you can always opt for automatic parking systems.
